Shining a light on Clapham Junction

Post Date: 18 Dec 2019

The historic Arding & Hobbs building – known locally as the home of Debenhams and TK Maxx – has been illuminated in a sequence of dynamic and dazzling colours as part of a stunning light show that will envelop the building throughout Christmas.

To celebrate the festive season, an impressive LED installation will showcase the façade of Debenhams in all its glory. A second sequence of colours will appear on the 31 December to celebrate the New Year, remaining on display until 2 January 2020. An architectural gem, the building is much-loved by residents and businesses alike.

In an energy-efficient LED lighting display, similar to County Hall on Southbank, the building will become a festive focal point in Clapham Junction, showcasing the heart of Battersea as an area bursting with unique shops, experiences and hip venues to explore. In addition to the new silver and gold festive lights created for Clapham Junction, Lavender Hill and Battersea Rise, this project is part of an initiative organised by The Clapham Junction Business Improvement District (BID) Ltd that supports BID businesses by creating effective partnerships and improving the trading environment and shopping experience for both residents and visitors.

Using best architectural practice and the latest generation LED technology, 25 linear fixtures have been carefully installed by illumination experts, EPS Lighting, with great sensitivity to the aesthetics, history and use of the building. The temporary lighting products are mounted to weighted plates placed on the building.

The Junction BID Executive Director, Roz Lloyd-Williams, commented, “We’re incredibly excited to see a project come to life after months of careful planning. The Arding & Hobbs building is an iconic landmark in Clapham Junction and the stunning display of hues will colour-wash this much-loved historical building, illuminating it in all its glory.

Clapham Junction is a buzzing cultural destination and home to some of our capital’s most exciting and unique arts and entertainment, independent businesses, fashionable boutiques, high street favourites and an enviable restaurant and bar scene. Our aim is to showcase this vibrant area and encourage more locals and visitors to discover our hidden gems. The illumination spectacle will truly shine a light on Clapham Junction and all it has to offer.”
