Wandsworth is London Borough of Culture 2025
Wandsworth wins bid to become London Borough of Culture 2025: Let’s do this together!
Published: Monday, March 11, 2024
We’re delighted to announce that Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, has chosen Wandsworth to become London Borough of Culture 2025.
The important announcement was made at a ceremony at City Hall today (Monday 11 March).
The Mayor of London’s culture scheme provides the winning borough with funding towards a year-long programme which celebrates local culture and heritage. The title helps to attract inward investment, create new employment opportunities, improve creative programmes and widen access to culture for residents.
The announcement is a huge boost to Wandsworth’s ability to develop the borough’s cultural and heritage sector. Read full details here...
Invitation to Wandsworth Together on Climate Change - Net Zero Summit
Battersea Arts Centre, March 12th 9.30-5pm
Tackling climate change is everyone’s business.
At Wandsworth Council we know we have a key role to play but it is only together with you, our partners, communities, local businesses, and experts in the field, that we can address the greatest challenge of our time.
We know action is underway through a range of activity across the borough, but we also know we need to do more – and faster. As a council we have recently commissioned research into the collective action that is needed for our borough to be net zero by 2043. If we work together and share our learning we have great potential to harness the energy and expertise of the many talents that want to make a difference.
In that spirit we have arranged a Net Zero Summit so that we can share the findings of the research, hear from industry experts, stakeholders and funders on the action they have taken and the support they can provide.
Our aim is to build a clearer picture on the action we can each take to move us towards this target. As part of the day we will be delivering “Together on Climate Knowledge” training - an opportunity to earn an accreditation as well as build each of our individual knowledge of the issue at hand and the impact we can each make.

Martyn's Law: Standard Tier Consultation
Martyn’s Law aims to enhance public safety by ensuring that premises are adequately prepared and protected against terrorist threats. If passed, new legislation will have a significant impact on venues and events, including those in Clapham Junction and, therefore, you are invited to share your views as part of the consultation process.
The Government are now consulting on the requirements imposed on standard tier premises under the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) and this consultation
This consultation closes at 11:59pm on 18 March 2024
This consultation is targeted at organisations, businesses, local and public authorities, and individuals who own or operate publicly accessible premises or events that the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Bill will potentially affect.
It seeks views from those responsible for smaller premises which would fall within the standard tier.
The bill will impose requirements in relation to certain premises and events to increase their preparedness for, and protection from, a terrorist attack by requiring them to take proportionate steps, depending on the size and nature of the activities that take place at the premises.
The proposed requirements would apply to those responsible for qualifying public premises and qualifying public events. They might be individuals but, in most cases, would be a business or other organisation.
One of the conditions for premises would be that they be wholly or mainly used for a listed purpose, such as the provision of entertainment and leisure facilities to the public.
The proposals set out different requirements for:
- standard tier premises, which would have a capacity of 100-799 individuals
- enhanced tier premises and qualifying public events, both of which have a capacity of 800 individuals or more
This consultation is focused on the requirements proposed in relation to standard duty premises, which are referred to as the “standard tier”. Remember, your feedback matters and will help shape the final legislation.

Night Time Strategy For Wandsworth
Wandsworth Council are developing a Night Time Strategy to help understand how we can make the night time a better experience for everyone living, working, and visiting the borough.
From celebration and entertainment, work and rest, travel, safety, and enjoyment of public spaces, the night time is a place for many things that cover all parts of life.
About the strategy
The strategy will look at issues like conditions for night workers as well as the economic and cultural development of night time activities. It will include ways we can plan for safety, design, lighting and transport at night.
We want to make sure Wandsworth continues to be an attractive place for people to spend time at night, as a destination for socialising, arts and culture, work, sport and eating and drinking. The findings will be used to support our town and local centres to ensure they are vibrant, resilient, and safe, and to support businesses to continue to recover from the pandemic and beyond.
What counts as the night time?
We know everyone spends their time in different ways, so Wandsworth Council will be exploring the evening (from 6pm until midnight) and late night (from midnight until 6am).
How to get involved
The strategy will be informed by comprehensive public engagement, with a focus on supporting all users of public space at night, including women and non-binary people and night time workers.
Wandsworth Council want to better understand your experiences of your area at night. Please help by completing the consultation survey and sharing it with others. Click here for more details and the link to the survey. The consultation closes on Friday 29 April 2022.
