Celebrating Black History Month at The Junction

October is Black History Month and the theme this year is Reclaiming Narratives. It's a time dedicated to sharing, celebrating and understanding the impact of black heritage and culture. 

As Wandsworth gears up to become The Mayor of London’s London Borough of Culture 2025, the borough is celebrating Black History 365 with an ambitious new programme of community-focused, cultural, arts and heritage-based activities and events which celebrate black history and culture, not only during October, but all year round. By sharing the stories and experiences of people of African or Caribbean heritage who live, work or study in Wandsworth the aim is to recognise the outstanding contribution made in shaping the borough.

Here in Clapham Junction, we kicked off the celebrations on Northcote Road…

ROOTS & CULTURE MARKET

Black History Month: Roots & Culture Market Northcote Road SW11

This year saw the inaugural Roots and Culture Market take place on Northcote Road SW11, a vibrant celebration of Black History Month!

This unique event featured a variety of activities, stalls and music, all dedicated to honouring Black history and supporting Black-owned businesses.

The diverse array of stalls showcased products from talented Black entrepreneurs, including handmade crafts, fashion, skincare, food and more. Plus, there was live music and performances by a Steel Pan group to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the African and Caribbean communities.

The was an historic event and a fantastic opportunity to support local Black-owned businesses in a day filled with culture, community, and celebration.

At Northcote Church (Northcote Road) we were invited to come in and experience a vibrant recreation of the living rooms of Caribbean immigrants who arrived in the Windrush era (1948-1971).
