You really don't have to travel far to be truly entertained in Clapham Junction!
From the hilarious to the inspiring and truly enlightening, The Junction is home to some of our capital’s most exciting and unique arts and entertainment.
It also boasts two historic venues which have become a cultural hub full of comedy, theatre, live gigs and big nights out, with plenty to keep you thoroughly entertained...
Battersea Arts Centre (BAC)
The BAC building, designed by E. W. Mountford (a local architect who designed the Central Criminal Court at the Old Bailey), opened in 1893 shortly after the Borough was transferred from Surrey to the newly formed County of London, where it functioned as Battersea’s Town Hall until 1965. After a successful campaign to avoid partial demolition, the building was given listed status in 1970 for its architectural significance and key role in the birth of the suffragette and labour movements. By 1974, the building was unlocked to create Battersea Arts Centre. In March 2015, during major renovation works, the Grand Hall was severely damaged by fire. Thanks to 80 heroic firefighters and incredible support from the local community, the building was saved. Over 6,000 people generously donated money to fund the rehousing of shows and to rebuild the Grand and Lower Halls. Today, the BAC remains the cultural heartbeat for arts and entertainment in The Junction area.
Clapham Grand (The Grand)
Loved by Londoners as the ultimate party venue which hosts a nightclub, live gigs, films, bingo and events, The Grand originally opened as ‘The New Grand Theatre of Varieties’ in 1900. It quickly established itself as the go-to music hall and variety venue for locals, featuring many well-known artistes of the time. In 1927, the theatre was fitted for cinema use and, after changing hands multiple times, along with a closure of 10 years, relaunched as the entertainment venue we know and love today.
Of course, BAC and The Grand are just two of the many amazing venues entertaining locals at The Junction and visitors from afar. Here's just a taster of what else is on this season...
