Post Date: 09 Sept 2025

“What’s the difference between Clapham Junction and Clapham?” or “Why is Clapham Junction in Battersea?” These are questions that have had people scratching their heads for many years and remain hot topics of discussion today.

Depending on which side of the fence you sit on (and in this case, there seems to be three sides to that fence!), people in SW11 will tell you they live or work in either Clapham Junction, Clapham, or Battersea.

A little confused? Well, as The Clapham Junction BID, we thought we’d take a moment to explain why our postcode seems to get people talking and help set the record straight…

It’s all in a name (or is it?)

Clapham Junction Shopping Centre

The name ‘Clapham’ is the common (no pun intended) denominator, so what’s the big deal if we’re Clapham Junction or Clapham?

In a nutshell, Clapham Junction is a designated town centre located in the Battersea district, which falls under the jurisdiction of the London Borough of Wandsworth. In contrast, Clapham is a district located within the boundaries of the London Borough of Lambeth.

With an estimated 2,000 trains passing through every day, Clapham Junction is the UK’s busiest interchange station, and understandably, this is why many people recognise the name.

But as many will know too, Clapham Junction is one of southwest London’s most popular destinations for entertainment, shopping and dining, which happens to be located in the popular district of Battersea.

So why the continued confusion around the name and its location? For that, we need to take a step back in time…

The history behind the name

In the early 1800s, the original area located in the historical parish of Battersea (now home to Clapham Junction) was predominantly rural, with pieces of agricultural land dedicated to the growing of lavender (hence the name behind Lavender Hill, to the east of the station).

However, by the time the station was built in 1863, much of the parish of Battersea was industrial, while Clapham (Lambeth), a mile south-east of this point, was deemed very fashionable and a desirable place to live.

Therefore, it’s believed that the railway companies' bid to seize the non-industrial Battersea area, along with using ‘Clapham’ as part of the station’s name, was a blatant attempt to appeal to the upper-class and wealthier demographic in nearby Clapham (Lambeth) – essentially to make it sound more sophisticated than ‘Battersea Junction’ and to minimise its industrial associations.

And so, since the station’s inception, this clever marketing ploy has caused over a century and a half of confusion (and the odd heated debate!), with several residents and businesses in SW11 believing they are in Clapham, which, of course, is on the other side of the Common in Lambeth!

And just when you thought it was as clear as mud, there’s the ‘Battersea’ debate to add to the mix!

So why is there a passionate contingent which supports the name Battersea rather than Clapham Junction? Those who are very much pro-Battersea would argue that the train companies created 160 years of confusion by naming the station Clapham Junction, even though it’s situated in the middle of Battersea, and therefore the locale should remain known as Battersea.

Also, and perhaps in a case of coming full circle, Battersea has long since shed its industrial reputation and now, especially with the development of Battersea Power Station as a new leisure and shopping destination, ‘Battersea’ is considered a far more fashionable and desirable place to live in than it was over a century ago.
